Melville’s Selected Poems; Published by the Arion Press

Melville 10Like many people for whom Moby Dick is the first thing that comes to mind when Herman Melville is mentioned, I’m not sure I was really aware of his poetry. Even after my second reading of Moby Dick, I never really connected Melville to the poem/hymn, commonly referred to as Jonah’s Song, in Chapter 9 of the novel. It was not until I had the pleasure of reading the Arion Press edition of Selected Poems for this review that I comprehended how much of a poet he really was. Continue reading

Sightings at the Antiquarian Book Fair in Pasadena

I had the sometimes bittersweet pleasure of strolling through the 47th California International Antiquarian Book Fair this past weekend in Pasadena. What an experience for a book lover. There’s something for everyone there, from comic books to a first edition Ulysses going for more than a new Bentley Continental. The bittersweetness for me was due to the fact that I allowed myself no book budget for the Fair, even if that little devil on my shoulder was telling me I should have some new treasure to review for The Whole Book Experience. Nevertheless, it was wonderful seeing so many books I’d only heard rumors of or that I never knew existed, as well as being able to reaffirm my intentions to some of the books on my long-term acquisition wish list. Porgy and Bess; Published by the Arion Press

Porgy and Bess 2 2When I think of Porgy & Bess, I immediately hear the song Summertime in my head. That’s the power of the associative property of music. Granted this is an opera, so music is implied, but I’ve never been to an opera in my life. I probably saw the movie way, way back in my youth but have no memory of it. The genius of Dubose Heyward and George Gershwin made sure that a part of their masterpiece would break out of an operatic world that was reluctant to call Porgy & Bess legitimate and firmly fix it in the American music catalog. Witness the many versions of Summertime. In just a short search of the internet, I found Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, The Doors (Wow! I was totally unaware of this cover…), Nina Simone, Big Mama Thorton (Holy Smokes!!!), and my favorite jazz instrumental version by Miles Davis. And then there is my high school classmate and Diva, Bea Gilbert singing with the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra. Continue reading

A Christmas Carol, or, A Miser’s Warning, by Charles Dickens and C. Z. Barnett; Published by The Barbarian Press

Misers Warning Cover

For this year’s Christmas book, I finish up with the last of the three Christmas-themed books published by the Barbarian Press. It’s fitting that the last is also the first in many respects. It was the first Christmas book that the press printed, and the tenth book overall, when it was published in 1984. It was also the first time they were to publish a book with illustrations. According to Hoi Barbaroi: A Quarter Century at the Barbarian Press, “the most important result of working with engravings was JE’s discovery of her affinity for printing them.” Finally, it was also the first time that Crispin cast type for a Barbarian Press book. Jim Rimmer of the Pie Tree Press & Typefoundry taught him to cast type and he was hooked. They bought the Monotype Sorts Caster from Rimmer and were off and running down another of printing’s many fascinating twists and turns. Continue reading

Undersea by Rachel L. Carson; Published by the Nawakum Press

Rachel Carson is one of my heroes. Her book Silent Spring shook up the global environmental movement, created enough of a stir to get DDT banned in the U.S., and created the momentum to create the Environmental Protection Agency. For her contributions she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Carter. One of my early childhood memories comes from around the late 1960’s when I lived in Key West Florida. My friends and I thought it was fun to ride behind the mosquito-sprayer trunk, disappearing in and out of the “fog”. It still makes me nervous to think that was probably a cloud of DDT I was breathing. Continue reading
