The Sundial by Shirley Jackson; published by the Arion Press

“A library is really a very good place to store things. I had never realized it before.” Thus states Essex while filling the library with things needed for the next world. The books that are removed to make room are burned.

Shirley Jackson’s novel from 1958 is the latest publication of the Arion Press and first release of 2011. Continue reading

I just got notice that my Pericles has shipped and is waiting for me at the post office. Stay tuned for a review of this long awaited book from the Barbarian Press. It has had a interesting journey from concept to completion but from my sneak peek at CODEX earlier this year, I know it was worth the wait.

The Toilers of the Sea by Victor Hugo; published by the Limited Editions Club

I dedicate this book to the rock of hospitality and liberty, to that nook of ancient Norman soil where dwells the noble little race of the sea, to the isle of Guernsey, severe yet gentle. My present asylum, probably my tomb.

–      V.H.

So reads the dedication for Toilers of the Sea, paying homage to the place where Victor Hugo lived for eighteen years and where he wrote this novel. And what a treat reading this Victor Hugo book has been for me. Continue reading

Folio Society Candide…OOP

Amazingly, the entire limitation of 1000 for the Folio Society’s new edition of Candide has sold out in less than a month. It looks beautiful and is signed by Quentin Blake. I’m not even sure that any of these have gone out the door yet.

The Arion Press Don Quixote

When the Arion Press announced that it would be publishing an edition of Don Quixote in the acclaimed new translation by Edith Grossman, I was ecstatic. Grossman managed to get Cervantes’ masterpiece back on the best-seller lists for several months following its publication. Reviews in the New York Times called the new translation “a major literary achievement” and the “most transparent and least impeded” of modern translations. Continue reading

The Letterpress Shakespeare, published by The Folio Society

Four titles from the Folio Society Letterpress Shakespeare

Far be it from me to write a review of the literary merits of The Bard. There have been plenty of people much more learned than me that have spent their lives doing just that in the almost 400 years since his death. I’m sure many doctorate degrees have been earned studying him and many pints have been tossed while discussing him. But I can chime in on what Shakespeare means to me and how I experience the Folio Society’s Letterpress Shakespeare editions. Continue reading
